Book Review: On Screen & Off Again by Caitlin Cross

From the moment Caitlin Cross’s On Screen & Off Again landed on my radar, I knew it would resonate with me. As a huge fan of second chance romances, the premise of two actors navigating the complexities of love and friendship promised a delightful escape, and I’m thrilled to say that it exceeded every expectation. I didn’t just like this book; I felt as though I experienced it, my heart racing alongside the characters as they journeyed through nostalgia and growth.

This beautifully crafted story unfolds across two timelines: the vibrant, carefree world of adolescence and the wonderfully messy reality of adulthood. Cross brilliantly weaves back and forth between "Now" and "Then," allowing us to dive into the minds of our protagonists both when they first fell in love and how they’ve changed—or not—over time. There’s a palpable sense of maturity that comes with revisiting old wounds and rekindling connections, and I adored witnessing how each character retained core traits while evolving through life’s ups and downs.

What truly struck me was the authenticity of their friendship. Typically, when characters transition from friends to lovers, the playful banter often fades into something more serious. However, Cross masterfully maintains that lightheartedness and camaraderie, letting us enjoy the richness of their past while being immersed in their present-day romance. Their consistent banter kept me chuckling, much like a reminder of those friends we treasure—love interests or not.

The plot itself, centered around a movie that mirrors their own relationship struggles, added yet another captivating layer to the narrative. I found myself deeply invested in the film’s storyline, wishing I could have a behind-the-scenes peak at the creative process. The way it intertwined with their personal arcs was seamless, and I must admit, there were moments when I teared up—an emotional journey that only strengthened my attachment to the characters.

While I can sing praises for the majority of the narrative, my one critique would be the pacing surrounding Dax’s character. I craved a bit more depth and exploration of his motivations; a touch more groveling might have amplified the emotional stakes. Although this didn’t detract significantly from my enjoyment, it left me with a few lingering questions that had me yearning for a deeper understanding of his perspective.

Finally, can we take a moment to appreciate that gorgeous cover? It’s both eye-catching and evocative, inviting you in before you even read the blurb. I can’t wait for the paperback release so I can add it to my shelf—this is one I’m sure I’ll revisit.

On Screen & Off Again is a beautiful tribute to the power of friendship and second chances. If you’re someone who enjoys heartwarming tales of love, rekindled connections, and a touch of nostalgia, this will undoubtedly capture your heart. Caitlin Cross’s latest work has left a mark on me, and I hope it does for you too.
